about

“Fusillade the Coalescent” is a song that handles about the execution of 18 Dutch resistance fighters during the Second World War, in Holland knows as “Geuzen”. (en francais Gueux, the word Gueux was used as a term of abuse by the Spaniard during the 80-year War). After the execution of these 18 freedomfighters the dutch poet and resistance fighter Jan Campert (he helped lots of jews to escape) wrote a poem about the execution “ The song of the 18 death” . Fusillade the coalescent tells us about this song and the last hours of the prisoners, and is a mark of honour to those who resisted against the dictatorship.

lyrics

Fussillade the Coalescent

Only two meters long
Narrow two meters broad
Small, is the bit of ground
Wich i now not yet know
Where i will nameless rest
We were eighteen in number
None will see the evening

Oh sweetness of light and country
Of our Dutch free coast
Once the enemy had overcome
No more rest for me
What must a man sincere and faithful
Still do in such a time
Embraces his child, embraces his wife
And the champions his ideal

I don’t know the task i started
Such a heavy task
But if the heart can’t help it
It won’t shun the danger
I know how once freedom
In this country was honoured
Before the evil hand
Took ours away
Remember when you read these words
My mates in affliction

Their surviving relatives
Who suffer from misfortune
So also we have thought
Our country and people
I didn’t know the task I started
Such a heavy task
But if the heart can’t help it
It won’t shun the danger
I know how once freedom
In this country was honoured
Before the evil hand
Took ours away
Remember when you read these words

Only two meters long
Narrow two meters broad
However small, is the bit of ground
Wich I now not yet know
But where i will nameless rest
Where we were eighteen in number

None will see the evening
Oh sweetness of light and country
Of our Dutch free coast
Once the enemy had overcome
No more rest for me

I don’t know the task i started
Such a heavy task
But if the heart can’t help it
It won’t shun the danger
I know how once freedom
In this country was honoured
Before the evil hand
Took ours away
Oh sweetness of light and country
Of our Dutch free coast

Only two meters long
Narrow two meters broad
Small, is the bit of ground
Wich i now not yet know

None will see
A (remember!)
NEW (when you!)
DAY (read these words!)
AFTER EVERY NIGHT
OUR
(my mates in affliction, their surviving relatives)
OWN
(who suffer from misfortune, so also we have thought)
COUNTRY
Gedenk die deze woorden leest
En die hen nastaan t’allermeest

Remember when you read these words
My mates in affliction
Their surviving relatives
Who suffer from misfortune
So also we have thought
Our country and people
Embraces his child, embraces his wife
And the champions his ideal

I didn’t know the task i started
Such a heavy task
But if the heart can’t help
